School Nurse Assistant

Reports To: Licensed District Registered Nurse and Campus Principal

Qualifications:

• Be a high school graduate or hold a GED certificate
• Any combination of experience and training which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills. An example of an acceptable combination is: Graduation from High School and one year of related work experience in a health office. LVN or Paramedic trained is preferred
• Valid CPR/First Aid Certificate
• Desire and ability to work with and effectively communicate with staff, students, and parents

Primary Purpose:

Work under the immediate guidance and direction of a licensed registered nurse to maintain routine clinic records, provide minor first aid care, and conduct health screenings.

Terms Of Employment:

Noncontractual (At-will), Clerical/Technical, 170 days, estimated 8 hours daily, Wage/Hour status: Nonexempt

Major Responsibilities And Duties:

• Administers medications to students under the direction of a credentialed School Nurse.
• Demonstrates skills to administer first aid/CPR; handling body fluids and waste materials; operate standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; prepare and maintain accurate records; respond appropriately to medical emergencies; prepare clear, concise and accurate reports, correspondence, and other written materials; operate a computer using word processing and other business software and standard office equipment.
• Maintains knowledge of emergency first aid/CPR procedures; safety practices and procedures; health standards and reporting procedures; local communicable diseases and their precautions, treatments and side effects; public health agencies and local health care resources available to district students and staff.
• Assists with vision and hearing screening.
• Cleans work areas (e.g. sinks, counters, cots, etc.).
• Communicates with students, teachers, counselors, parents, etc. and responds to questions related to students health under the direction of a credentialed School Nurse.
• Maintains student health records (e.g. prescription dispensing log, accident reports, claim forms, etc.) under the direction of a credentialed School Nurse.
• Complies with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
• Complies with all district and campus routines and regulations.

Tools/Equipment Used:

Standard medical clinic equipment; special needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

• Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting
• Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension
• Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting nonambulatory students
• Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases
• Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
